The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy has revealed her hopes for a second season of the Netflix drama, admitting that she'd like to see her character Beth Harmon embrace a "Bowie phase".
The mini-series – based on Walter Tevis' novel of the same name – proved successful as a standalone serial, but its lead isn't entirely against the idea of returning to chess prodigy Beth's story.
Speaking to Elle recently, Anya conceded that she was unlikely to turn down the opportunity to reprise her role. "It would be silly of me to go, 'There's never going to be a second series,'" she said.
"And then I'm 40, and [co-creator Scott Frank]'s like, 'Yo, how do you feel about this? You want to go back?'"
As for how a second season of The Queen's Gambit might play out, Anya is hoping to see Beth "start doing things for her own enjoyment".
"I'd like Beth to pick up Benny and spend some time with him in Russia, just the two of them being snobby intellectuals together," she continued. "And I hope she has a Bowie phase."
This isn't the first time the actress has floated the idea of returning to the chessboard – earlier this year, while reflecting on the series' reception, Anya said that she was "quite surprised when people started asking for season two".
"We did intend it to be a limited series," she added. "That being said, never say never."
