Disney and Pixar are releasing a new short based on the feature film Soul, which stars Tina Fey as the sarcastic ‘soul 22’ character she played in the full length movie.

Soul followed the story of a teacher and aspiring jazz musician, Joe Gardner who tries to escape death, but instead ends up with his soul in the “Great Before” where new souls are prepared for life before being sent to Earth.

The new Pixar short film is a prequel to Soul, following Tina Fey’s character, a cynical soul in preparation, known as 22. The short explores how 22 became so cynical and didn’t want to live on Earth, as was expected.

In the plot, 22 gathers other new souls and tries to lead the gang of five into a rebellion which, according to Disney, “may actually lead to a surprising revelation about the meaning of life.”

Pixar’s Kevin Nolting directed the short and said that he believes, “the new souls make the short so fun—the contrast of their pure innocence and delight with the cynical expectations of 22.”

22 vs. Earth will be available to stream on Disney+ from 30 April. You will need a subscription to Disney+ to be able to watch.
