The Queen turns 95 today (21 April) and the Royal Family has paid tribute by sharing a smiling photograph of Her Majesty.

The post was shared on the Palace’s official Instagram account which explained that, “The Queen was born at 2.40am on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London. She was the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.”

The Queen’s birthday comes just days after the moving funeral of Prince Philip, her husband of 73 years.

The post explained that, for this reason, “Her Majesty remains at Windsor Castle, during a period of Royal Mourning” for her birthday this year.

Many members of the public left birthday wishes and condolences in the comments, hoping the best for the Queen while acknowledging her loss.

“Happy birthday your majesty,” read one message. “I’m sorry you’re having to spend it under such unusual circumstances, and without Prince Phillip by your side. We are all thinking of you today.”

“Wishing a very happy birthday to our remarkable Queen. All my thoughts go to her in this difficult period,” read another.

Prince Philip sadly passed away on Friday 9 April. His funeral took place on Saturday 17 April at which the Queen was present along with a total of 30 guests.

Prince Charles, Prince William and Harry were three of those who walked with the coffin as the procession moved to St George’s Chapel, Windsor, where the funeral service took place.

Prince Philip’s coffin was transported in a custom adapted Land Rover hearse, which the Duke had assisted in designing himself.

The Duke of Edinburgh was heavily involved with the planning of his own funeral, although adjustments had to be made due to restrictions around the pandemic. This was most apparent in the number of guests in attendance, reduced from 800 to 30.
