The first image of Poldark's Aidan Turner as artist and intellect Leonardo da Vinci in new period drama Leonardo has been shared ahead of the series release in April.
The actor plays da Vinci in the series, which is produced by Lux Vide and Big Light Productions with RAI Fiction, and follows the artist as he learns his craft and prepares to paint the prodigious The Last Supper.
The drama's synopsis reads: "The show attempts to unlock the enigma of this extraordinary and yet incredibly contemporary man in a fresh and truly original way, through an untold story of mystery and passion."
The series also stars The Undoing's Matilda de Angelis as da Vinci's reported Renaissance muse Caterina Da Cremona, and Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel, The Good Doctor) as fictional police detective, Stefano Giraldi.
James D'Arcy (Broadchurch, Dunkirk) plays Italian Renaissance nobleman Ludovico Sforza, and Oscar-winner Giancarlo Giannini stars as Italian painter, sculptor, and goldsmith, Andrea Del Verrocchio.
The show's writers Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files, Medici) and Steve Thompson (Sherlock) says the series will portray da Vinci's relationships with men, and aims to capture his close friendship with de Angelis' Caterina Da Cremona.
"Some of his relationships were with men; those were significant relationships," he told Variety. "But perhaps the most significant relationship in his life was with a friend who was a woman, with whom he was very close, and we unpack that. Leonardo is framed as a murder mystery, and it claims to use this device to get at the reality of who the great Renaissance man was."
Leonardo will launch on Prime Video on 16 April.
