The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge set off on a three-day royal train tour this week, to meet with those in England, Scotland and Wales who have supported their communities throughout this difficult year.

After leaving Euston station in London, the couple stopped in Edinburgh to meet with paramedics and staff of the Scottish Ambulance Service before heading to the Holy Trinity Church of England First School in Berwick-Upon-Tweed to meet with teachers and pupils.

To finish off their first day of engagements, the Duke and Duchess headed to Batley in West Yorkshire where Kate finally had the chance to meet with a man she had spoken to on the phone previously while she volunteered for the NHS Check In and Chat scheme earlier this year.

The scheme has supported vulnerable people and the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic by recruiting volunteers to provide grocery and prescription deliveries, lifts to medical appointments and ‘check in and chat’ calls.

Earlier this year, the Duchess was paired with 85-year-old Len Gardner who she spoke with on the phone and via letters during the national lockdown.

Kate and William met with Len and his wife Shirley outside their home, where a brass band also played a series of festive songs.

The Duke and Duchess will continue their royal tour today.
