Kate Winslet is certainly a force to be reckoned with in the world of acting, having won an Oscar, Emmy and a Grammy, as well picking up Golden Globes and BAFTAs.
Although Kate stepped in front of the camera at the tender age of 15 in the British television series, Dark Season, her breakthrough role followed two years later in 1995 playing Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, which saw her scoop up her first BAFTA Award.
Two years later she secured one of the leading roles, in what has arguably been her biggest movie of all time, Titanic, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. It was this that paved the way to global stardom for Winslet and she’s never looked back since, securing lead roles in a mixture of film genres like The Holiday, Revolutionary Road and The Mountain Between Us.
There's no doubt about it, Kate is an actor whose name is certainly going to go down in history for her talent. Here, we take a look at some of her most sparkling movies to date…
Sense and Sensibility
Not only did Kate receive her first Oscar nomination for her performance in this romantic-drama, but it also allowed her to show her talent when it comes to acting in period pieces. Based on Jane Austin’s 17th century novel and adapted by Emma Thompson (who also stars alongside Winslet) the story follows three young girls reeling after the passing of their father. It’s then up to the two oldest (Winslet and Thompson) to provide for the family, who are also suffering from heartbreak.
Titanic
Kate and her film co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio were both just in their twenties in this film, which has gone on to be one of their biggest movies of all time. Kate plays Rose, an aristocrat who catches the eye of Jack Dawson (DiCaprio), a poor artist and falls in love with him. If you haven’t already watched it, you must! (And we highly recommend having a box of tissues within reach.)
Iris
In this 2001 biographical drama Winslet plays the young novelist, Iris Murdoch, alongside Judi Dench (who plays the older Iris). It follows the writer meeting her husband, John Bayley, at university and their life together before becoming diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Both actresses received awards for their performances, as well as a stream of nominations.
The Holiday
Kate is refreshing in this Christmas classic, playing newspaper columnist, Iris. After her love life takes a massive blow she swaps houses for the Christmas period with Amanda (Cameron Diaz) who’s love life is going just as terribly. Their lives seem to take a turn for the better, though, when they both meet local men and fall in love.
Steve Jobs
Kate becomes confidant to the late Co-Founder of Apple (played by Michael Fassbender) in this film about the tech giant's life. She plays Joanna Hoffman, a marketing executive at the company who also becomes Jobs’ guiding force. Her performance was widely praised, earning her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and a BAFTA for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
The Mountain Between us
In this adventure-thriller adapted from Charles Martin’s 2011 novel, Kate plays Alex, a journalist who becomes stranded in the Utah mountains with surgeon Ben (Idris Alba) after a plane crash. Whilst trying to survive in the mountains the two begin to fall in love, but will they get home? And are there people there waiting for them? Gripping and intense with brilliant performances from both parties.
Revolutionary Road
Kate and Leonardo team up for their second on-screen collaboration in this romantic drama. They play a couple who live in the suburbs of Connecticut and from the outside seem like a match made in heaven, but in reality, this isn’t the case. Frank (DiCaprio) isn’t happy in his job and April (Winslet) wants to become an actress. The story follows the difficulties the couple face whilst navigating life’s challenges and a warning - there’s a tragic ending.
The Reader
Winslet earned an Oscar for Best Performing Actress, playing Hanna Schmitz, an older woman who has an affair with a teenage boy, Michael. Their relationship soon comes to an abrupt end and years later they meet again, but this time in a courtroom. Michael is a law student observing a notorious trial and Hanna is the defendant, keeping a secret which could help her case.
