The Nest viewers were thrown into turmoil once more following a major bombshell which questioned the heritage of Kaya's baby in last night's gripping episode.

The BBC One drama follows Line of Duty's Martin Compston and Gentleman Jack's Sophie Rundle as young wealthy couple Dan and Emily who, unable to conceive, pay 18-year-old teenager Kaya (Mirren Mack) to be the surrogate for their child.

Although Dan is concerned about Kaya's background, they go ahead with the plan using their last remaining embryo. Last week, Dan had secretly discovered that Kaya had seemingly murdered a pregnant woman when she was a child, and in last night's episode, he finally came clean to Emily.

Meanwhile, Kaya's boyfriend Jack (Samuel Paul Small) - Dan and Emily's nephew - also found out about her dark past, which prompted a distressed Kaya to run away.

When Jack finds her unconscious, she is rushed to hospital where doctors have to perform a cesarean delivery to save the baby. Later on, Emily and Dan are finally allowed to see their baby in an incubator in the hospital - but is the baby actually theirs?

This mind-blowing twist arrived when an investigator quizzed Kaya's social worker James (James Harkness) about her relationship with former neighbour Kian Dodds aka Doddy - who was found dead in a river at the end of the first episode.

The investigator drops the bombshell that Kaya and Doddy broke up 25 weeks ago, the exact length of time before her baby was delivered by C-section.

Are Kaya and Doddy the baby's real parents? Viewers were stunned and left asking themselves that very question.

Some fans think there could be a connection between Doddy and social worker James' partner/mother to their young daughter, who James revealed in last night's episode was back on the streets battling drug addiction. Was Doddy a drug dealer? Did he deal drugs to James' partner?

Viewers were also moved by Martin Compston's powerful performance as his character Dan broke down in tears as the drama escalated.

Roll on Sunday.

The Nest continues next Sunday (April 12) on BBC One at 9pm.
