Call The Midwife regularly brings in talented guests stars and in this current season, that trend has continued. In episode four, EastEnders star Phil Daniels joined the cast as George Benson, a lonely man struggling with his health until the intervention of Fred (Cliff Parisi) and Reggie (Daniel Laurie).

In the same episode, a group of young doctors were also introduced - the four men visited Nonnatus House to learn about delivering babies under the guidance of the midwives.

The young men made a good first impression with midwives and expectant mums alike, however Dr Benedict Walters (Sam Woolf) confided in Nurse Trixie (Helen George) that he felt a lack of passion for his job. After he led a late night drinking session with some of his fellow doctors and was caught by Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), it became clear he perhaps wasn't taking his posting hugely seriously.

The same couldn't be said for Dr Kevin McNulty (Lee Armstrong), who clearly cared a lot about his role at Nonnatus House and the women going through pregnancy and labour.

Kevin struck up a good relationship with Nurse Valerie (Jennifer Kirby) and learned a lot from her on the maternity ward, working together on a difficult birth.

The doctor also helped Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) diagnose a tricky health issue in George Benson and overall, proved himself to be a good addition to Nonnatus House.

At the end of the episode, the doctors ended their training and left, however fans were left hoping Dr McNulty would be brought back as a permanent member of the cast.

With Dr Turner struggling to keep up with his workload, it would definitely solve a problem to have Dr McNulty on board full-time and a big hint at the end of episode five suggests that may well happen.

At the end of the episode a preview for the next instalment featured a glimpse of Dr McNulty arriving at the surgery and greeting Miss Higgins. Is he just popping back to Poplar or will he be sticking around permanently?
