Call The Midwife fans were touched by a poignant story line of female friendship on last night's episode.

In the second episode of the new series, receptionist Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen) spoke to her Nonnatus House friends about her fledgling relationship with local police officer Sergeant Woolf (Trevor Cooper) and excitedly revealed their plans to have a holiday.

However things went awry when Sergeant Woolf suffered a heart attack. Thanks to the quick actions of Nurse Valerie (Jennifer Kirby), he made it through but in hospital was given a bleak prognosis and signed off work.

The sergeant confided in Nurse Phyllis (Linda Bassett) that because of this, he felt unable to allow himself to grow closer with Miss Higgins.

When Miss Higgins next visited the hospital, the police officer broke the news and though she was measured, she was clearly upset.

Fans took to social media to empathise with the receptionist and the sergant.

Thankfully, Nurse Crane was on hand to offer support, and gave comforting words to Miss Higgins over a flask of tea.
