I'm a Celebrity fans have seen their last Main Camp vs Extra Camp challenge.

When the jungle reality competition returns later this year, there will be an aftershow-sized hole every single night because I'm a Celebrity: Extra Camp is cancelled.

Extra Camp co-presenter Joel Dommett shared the sad news on Instagram on Thursday (January 9) that ITV2 has axed the series because of high production costs.

"Sad news - The time has unfortunately come to put Extra Camp to bed in its uncomfortable hammock," he wrote. "The show will no longer continue. It's been a huge privilege to be a part [of] a show with such a rich history filled with amazing hosts."

The comedian then joked: "The producers have assured me that @emilyatackofficial @adamthomas21 and myself are not to blame - they said the show was better than ever and also that Joel is the sexiest presenter we have ever had (I wasn't listening but it was something like that) - it is simply because it's expensive given how late it's on and the funds will be used in more prime time slots.

"I've told them that Adam will do it for free but the decision is made. Thank you to all the crew who have made this the most wonderful 3 years, you have shaped me as a person and presenter. I've learnt so much. Thank you to everyone for watching #extracamp"

The ITV2 series has gone through several different iterations over the years, having originally been known as I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! NOW! until 2015.

The format featured celebrity guests flown to Oz to join the hosts for multi-day stints, where they'd take part in trials mimicking the ones faced by the campers on the main show.

Kelly Osbourne, Emma and Matt Willis, Caroline Flack and her Love Island replacement Laura Whitmore, Vicky Pattison and Jeff Brazier were among the many famous faces who hosted the after-show in its early years.

The most recent Extra Camp series featured I'm a Celebrity 2017 runner-up Emily Atack and Emmerdale star Adam Thomas joining Dommett to replace Scarlett Moffatt and Joe Swash.

I'm a Celebrity will return later this year on ITV.
