Call The Midwife season 9 kicked off with the 2019 Christmas special, which saw the Nonnatus House nurses head off to the remote Outer Hebrides to help locals deliver babies under truly difficult circumstances.

Following on from the festive episode, series nine will continue to entertain, shock and pull at heartstrings and BBC One has shared first images of episode one.

The sneak peek images tease lots more drama for our favourite Call The Midwife characters from Nurse Trixie to Doctor Turner - would we expect anything less?
