Game of Thrones' 'Age of Heroes' prequel series starring Naomi Watts is cancelled by HBO

One of HBO's five Game of Thrones spin-off series won't be moving forward as the network has scrapped plans for a prequel show from showrunner Jane Goldman that starred Naomi Watts.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the project, which shot a full pilot episode over the summer, has not been picked up to series, which means that Thrones fans won't be getting to see a series focusing on Westeros' famed Age of Heroes after all.

As it stands, HBO is still considering a second Game of Thrones prequel focusing on the House of Targaryen after it was reported that the broadcaster was close to ordering a pilot for the project last month.

The prequel pilot had been written by Kingsman scribe Jane Goldman and George RR Martin, and was set thousands of years before the events of the hit HBO series. It was described by HBO as a show that "chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour".

Naomi Watts was confirmed as a leading cast member last year, while The Rise of Skywalker newcomer Naomi Ackie, Collette actress Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) and Miranda Richardson were also set to star.

In 2017, author Martin shared that the prequel was just one of a number of potential successor shows to the reign of Game of Thrones, but despite having so many projects in the works, HBO programming president Casey Bloys clarified they weren't looking to bring them all to air.

"The idea is not to do four shows (or five, as we now know)," he explained. "The bar set by [showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it."

Last month, Bloys confirmed that he was considering ordering some of the other projects it currently has in development too, and with the Age of Heroes prequel now dead in the water, it looks like only one Thrones spin-off will be getting to the Iron Throne HBO.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray now.
