Great British Bake Off fans have been left devastated for Steph after she had a tough performance in last night's final (October 29).

David was crowned the winner of this year's series after calmly wowing the judges in each of the final three challenges. He also beat off competition from Alice, who had emerged in recent weeks as a bit of a dark horse.

However, Steph was largely considered to be the favourite going into the final, having won Star Baker more times (four) than anyone else in the competition.

But it just wasn't her day, bless her.

For the Signature challenge, the bakers were tasked with making a decadent, luxurious chocolate cake, and it was really the only part of the final that went reasonably well for her.

She had a disaster in the Technical, failing to properly bake her stilton soufflé, presenting judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with a tray of liquid. And her lavish biscuits were also over-baked.

For the Showstopper – in which the bakers were asked to make a picnic feast, consisting of cake, sweet bread and biscuits – Steph once again failed to hit the mark, with Paul and Prue's damning verdict reducing her to tears.

Many viewers consider Steph to have been the best and most consistent baker throughout the course of this year's series, so they were naturally devastated to see her fall to pieces when it really counted.

One person tweeted: "I feel for Steph, she has consistently been the best baker but stuffed it at the last."

While another wrote: "Gutted for Steph! She was incredible all season and one day ruined it all? She's amazing!"
