When I was young, it seemed like the summer holidays went on forever. I still look back fondly at some of the antics I'd get up to in order to keep myself occupied, like cleaning cars to make some extra cash, getting outside to explore the garden or spending time at my gran's house.
Now that I have my own children, I'm fully aware that keeping them active and engaged over the break means everyone will be happy - and I won't start pulling my hair out. Even though they do test my patience, I love spending all my time with my children.
When our energy banks are depleted, the easiest way to relax together is to huddle up in the living room and stream a movie (...or three). Here are five of my favourites, streaming on NOW TV this August.
1. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
This year our family staycation was in Scotland, so we booked a trip on The Jacobite, the train that stood in for the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter movies. We can't wait to watch this mystical spin-off sequel — give it a go when you need some magic in your afternoon.
2. Smallfoot
Smallfoot is the perfect film to stream at the airport while waiting for your flight home; it's definitely one for the whole family. Smallfoot is the story of a friendly yeti called Migo whose world goes into a spin when he discovers humans. Great fun with some heart-warming fuzziness, too.
3. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
This is the first animated Spider-Man feature film and it has award-winning animation and a smart storyline. Lots of my friends and their children have raved about it, so I have to get involved too. I already know I'll love the positive messages and themes running through the movie, so this is definitely worth a watch.
4. Aquaman
I'm not normally a huge superhero movie fan, but this film has incredible special effects and engaging characters. The humour makes this movie stand out from the rest of the extended DC universe — watch when it's too hot outside and you need a refreshing break.
5. Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2
In this sequel to Wreck-It Ralph, titular character Ralph and young racer Vanellope have become best friends and are having a great time. However, they're looking for some excitement and need a new adventure, and it doesn’t take long before exploring the Internet gets them into a lot of trouble.
