As BBC One’s Poldark draws to a close it’s not just fans who are feeling nostalgic. The cast, creative team and crew who’ve been working on the show for five series are getting sentimental, too.
In fact, they’ve been giving and receiving sweet keepsakes to commemorate their time working on the hit period drama, with the production company who make Poldark giving decanter glasses and bottles of Port with the dates of the series to those who’ve been there from the beginning to the end.
And that’s not all, cast members revealed to press including Goodhousekeeping.com/uk that they’ve also walked away from the show with personal souvenirs, and the stories behind some of them are too sweet.
Eleanor Tomlinson, who plays Demelza, opted to keep a key piece of costume.
“I kept my corset, it’s one of the few things I kept. I wore it for five years, I thought it would be weird for me not to have it,” she said.
Poldark actor Aidan Turner left the show with a rather hefty item.
“I took the kitchen table [from Nampara, the Poldark family home] and the benches - I went big,” he said.
Aidan’s house is being renovated and when it’s done, the table will be pride of place there.
“It’s at the centre of all those important scenes we shot in Cornwall and that was always my favourite location. It just made sense to take it,” he said.
Ellise Chappell, who portrays Morwenna, also has a lovely connection to the props she walked away with.
“I took Morwenna’s shell bracelet, which I love. I also took an antique book that Chris [from the props department] got for me.
“When I first got the script through for series three, in of the scenes it said Morwenna was reading a book called Cecilia and I remember getting the book and being so excited. Chris sourced an antique Cecelia [for filming], I remember I was reading it in a scene in series three, sat on the sofa and Christian (Ozzy) came in and interrupted. Then I used the same book when I came back from a hanging, I was pretending to read and winter primroses were [pressed] in the book,” she explained.
“I told Chris I’d just love to take some antique books and he gave me Cecelia. It's only when I got home that I opened it up and the winter primroses we’re still all pressed on the inside. It’s also got a little sticker on it that says Morwenna because it’s my prop,” she said.
Other cast who took props to remind them of their characters are Jack Farthing (George Warleggan) and Luke Norris (Dr Dwight Enys).
“Chris [from props] gave me a bottle of medicine and a magnifying glass,” Luke said.
“There’s a particularly beautiful tailcoat that was made. I spent most of series five in it and I think it's really lovely. I’ll never wear it I’m sure but it’s quite comforting,” Jack said.
Poldark returns to BBC One at 9pm on 14 July.
