Call The Midwife season 8 has once again highlighted the plight of women unable to receive a safe and legal abortion, featuring a tragic storyline that left viewers heartbroken.

The show has previously tackled the issue of women in 1960s Poplar seeking back street abortions because at that time, it was illegal for a doctor to carry out the procedure in England.

Last night (3 February) the BBC series again highlighted the issue by featuring Jeannie, a woman who discovered she was pregnant just seven months after giving birth and feared having to raise two babies so close together would impact her mental health.
