Call The Midwife season eight returned to our screens last night (13 January), and true to form it had us feeling very emotional.

The premiere episode featured the story of a young woman suffering hugely after having a back-street abortion that had gone wrong.

In 1964, when the current season is set, abortion was illegal in England and the young woman was reluctant to seek medical help for fear of getting into trouble with the law. Luckily, Nurse Valerie (Jennifer Kirby) intervened, staying with her as the abortion took effect and giving her the care and support she needed.

The emotional scene had viewers in tears.

Viewers also took to Twitter to share their shock at another of the episode’s storylines – a woman, and mum of two young boys, giving birth to triplets when she initially thought she was having twins.

The episode ended with the triplet’s father stepping up to care for the sickly newborn and the family coming together happily. Cue more tears.

Call The Midwife returns to BBC One this Sunday at 8pm.
