When Bodyguard star Richard Madden became a surprise winner at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, he was on stage in front of two very special people.

Madden beat the likes of Jason Bateman and Matthew Rhys to win the Best Performance in a Television Series – Drama at the Globes for his portrayal of David Budd in the BBC series.

The former Game of Thrones star Madden is certainly no stranger to the awards show stage, but seemed taken aback to have actually won the solo acting prize for Bodyguard.

"I didn't see this coming at all," he admitted in his acceptance speech. "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the amazing crew and cast who made Bodyguard, who worked really hard over the course of five months," he said in his acceptance speech.

Madden went on: "I want to thank you to [co-star] Keeley Hawes. She's the best actress I could ever work with. She's amazing and generous… And Jed Mercurio, thanks for writing this!

"Thanks for trusting me to do it. You're amazing. Thank you."

The actor then shared that winning the Globe was particularly special because two loved ones had travelled a very long way to accompany him to the gala.

"Most importantly, I want to thank my friends and my family," he said. "Mum and dad, who flew all the way from Scotland, I wouldn't be here without you!'

The 76th Golden Globe Awards aired live on Sunday night from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California on NBC in the US.
