If you live in a busy household (or you live with a messy cook!) keeping kitchen worktops looking their best can seem like a never-ending task.

While it's unlikely scrubbing kitchen surfaces will ever be a task you actively look forward to, it is a necessary part of everyday life and this is one task you can speed through with the right know how.

No matter what kind of surfaces you have in your kitchen, our cleaning guide from the GHI experts will help have your kitchen sparkling in no time.

Maintaining your worktops

Aside from wiping the obvious areas of a kitchen worktop, it's important to reach those often forgotten areas, like behind the toaster and under the breadbin, in order for the surface to be truly clean.

If you're moving a small appliance to clean underneath or behind it, make sure you unplug it first and move it out of the area you're cleaning so you don't get any liquids near it.

Remember, even the smallest scrap of food is a magnet for pests, so watch out for crumbs or food debris scattered across the worktops.

Cleaning natural solid surfaces

This category of worktop includes surfaces made from materials including granite or composite worktops, but you can use the same method on laminate surfaces, too.

Wipe down with hot, soapy water, or use an all-purpose cleaner with added disinfectant such as Zoflora Blackcurrant & Jasmine Multipurpose Disinfectant Cleaner. Use a clean cloth or paper towels to dry.

Remove stains by scrubbing gently with a cream cleaner, such as Cif, or a paste made of bicarbonate of soda and water. On textured surfaces, use a nylon bristle brush to get into the grain.

Cleaning ceramic tile worktops

Treat as for other worktops above. Clean dirty grout with a toothbrush and a solution made of one part bleach to four parts water. Wipe over with a damp cloth and allow to dry.

GHI Tip: Always make sure to ventilate a room properly before using bleach to avoid the inhalation of fumes.

Cleaning stainless steel worktops

For thorough cleaning, wash stainless steel with a solution of washing-up liquid and buff dry with a soft cloth.

To remove fingermarks, put a dab of cooking or baby oil on a clean cloth and rub the whole surface, concentrating on marked areas.

Cleaning wooden worktops

Treat as other natural surfaces. Clean kitchen worktops thoroughly every three months or so to keep them stain-and water-resistant. Wiping them down every day will ensure they don't get dirty quickly.
