Who wouldn’t want to declutter with Stacey Solomon? Starring in the popular Sort Your Life Out series, she’s helped all kinds of families sort through no end of clutter, leading to life-changing results. Her understanding and innovative flair when it comes to storage solutions makes her opinion worth its weight in gold. So it’s worth keeping an eye out for her new documentary series, which is due to air in spring 2025.

But her latest fix for organising underwear as part of her ‘January reset’ has left fans somewhat divided – especially as it involves the wardrobe and a plastic bag dispenser! The question is: would it work or would you literally get your knickers in a twist? Before you rip out your drawers, we’ve looked at the method and its potential pros and cons below, to help you decide.

What is Stacey Solomon’s underwear storage hack?

Rather than leaving your pants bundled up in a drawer, Stacey recommends investing in a plastic bag dispenser, stacking your underwear inside it and hanging it on the rail inside the wardrobe instead.

She said: ‘So today I put my knickers in a plastic bag holder. I’m sick of my knickers, bras and socks getting all jumbled up in the drawer, so I’m separating them.’

The idea is, you get quick and easy access to your underwear every day, pulling items out one at a time. Stacey says she’ll store her socks and bras separately in her bedside drawers to stop them getting jumbled.

Below is an example of what you could use if you wanted to try this for yourself, but you would need to mount it inside a wardrobe rather than hang it from the rail.

Verdict

There are benefits to doing this:

  • Prevents tangling and bundling in your underwear drawer.
  • Keeps pants separated from socks and bras, so there’s no mix-up when trying to grab one of each.
  • By moving your pants into your wardrobe, it frees up more space in your drawers.
  • Pants are easy to find when needed.
  • Neat and tidy storage solution compared with bundling pants in a drawer.

But there are drawbacks, too:

  • Takes up a fair amount of space in the wardrobe, leaving less room to hang items, although you could mount the dispenser on a wall instead.
  • Difficult to find a particular pair of pants, or colour, when needed. If you need to switch depending on the clothes you’re wearing, or you want a pair to match a particular bra, it could be tricky.
  • There may be issues with removing pants one at a time. They could catch on each other, pulling others out and leaving a mess on the wardrobe floor.
  • The pants in the video look like they’re stretching as they’re being removed. Underwear could become damaged when handled like this, particularly if it’s made from a delicate material, such as silk.
  • The pants aren’t stored neatly with the dispenser, so they could look wrinkled.

Alternative ways to store your underwear

If you want to keep your underwear in a drawer, but it’s a tangled mess, there are other ways to organise it. Drawer dividers can be inserted to create separate cubby holes for your pants, socks and bras. You could either buy a single large one to fit the whole drawer, or separate smaller baskets to customise where you want things.

Just remember that these drawers are only as organised as you keep them, so you need to break the habit of chucking items in when you put away the washing. By folding pants and socks, you can make better use of the space. The only exception here is bras; these should not be bent or folded to avoid damage.
