Strictly Come Dancing favourite Johannes Radebe has completely transformed a London- based LGBTQIA+ community centre in a stunning interiors makeover, creating a welcoming safe space.
The Outside Project space was created to support LGBTQIA+ community who feel endangered, who are homeless or experience ‘hidden’ homelessness. A space to use and enjoy, it aims to meet users' needs that other services may not successfully cater to due to prejudice in society and in their homes. Centres like this are so vital, with recent research showing that over 30% of homeless youth in the UK are LGBTQ+[1].
The space was in much need of a refresh to best meet its purpose and Johannes worked with MADE.com to create that haven, with stunning results.
Speaking about his involvement in the project, Johannes Radebe said in the press release: "Over the past couple of years we have all come to appreciate our homes more. For queer people, a home isn’t always a safe environment and therefore places like The Outside Project are invaluable resources. That’s why I’ve been delighted to join forces with MADE to create a warming and welcoming community centre for all its users.”
The busy space was packed with functional and social resources, in a cluttered but character-full chaos. Now with its new makeover the space is also a calming and inviting interiors space with well-designed areas to work, relax, read and socialise.
Jesse Ashman, Partnerships Manager at The Outside Project added: “We are so excited by the transformation of the space, I love the colour and vibrancy that MADE and Johannes have injected. It was really important for all the community centre users that the centre kept some of its original features whilst also feeling refreshed and homely, MADE and Johannes have done just that.”
It's such a beautiful and transformative project and both Johannes and the team at MADE really pulled out the stops for this community lifeline. Services like this are overstretched and underfunded with tight budgets having to focus on essential services, making a revamp like this out of reach. This uplifting makeover will touch the lives of so many and facilitate the brilliant work the project already does.
