The former Grade II listed home of Dame Agatha Christie has just come on the market in Wallingford, Oxfordshire.
Winterbrook House, which is perched on the banks of the River Thames, was the crime novelist's home for more than 40 years up until her death in 1976. Agatha purchased the property with her archaeologist husband Max Mallowan in 1934, writing many of her famous novels at the home.
The house is brimming with character, including a Queen Anne façade, brick dressings, Georgian additions, and a blue plaque by the front door in recognition of its famous former owner. Described by agents as an 'elegant five-bedroom home', it's perfect for those looking to snap up a slice of British history.
The inside feels like a cosy escape cocooned in the Oxfordshire countryside. Some rooms of particular interest include the study, library and drawing room, as well as the spacious kitchen which has its own walk-in larder and separate utility room.
With accommodation arranged over three floors and an adjoining one bedroom cottage, there's certainly enough space for the whole family. There's a lot of cheery yellow in the house (her favourite colour perhaps), as well floor-to-ceiling windows which flood the space with light.
"Agatha Christie is one of Britain's most-loved authors and it's a genuine opportunity for someone to own a piece of literary history," says Stephen Christie-Miller, head of residential sales at Savills Henley. "She wrote some of her bestselling novels in the house and Winterbrook itself is thought to have been the model for Danemead – Miss Marple's house in the village of St Mary Mead.
"Set in about five acres, the property is arranged over three floors with well-proportioned rooms, high ceilings and large windows that provide plenty of natural light. Many period features have also been retained – creating a stunning family home full of immense character and charm."
Feast your eyes on the garden. Running down to the River Thames, the space extends to around five acres and includes sweeping lawns, meadows, mature hedging, flowerbeds, perennial plants, and a profusion of shrubs which gives the garden interest all year round.
Winterbrook House is currently on the market for £2,750,000 with Savills.
