1 Haircare hazard. The number of children burnt by hair straighteners has doubled in recent years and 40% of adults have been injured, too. As straighteners stay hot for 15 mins, put them in a heat-resistant pouch (Lakeland, £12.99).
2 Have a singsong – von Trapp-style, or join a choir. Singing in company cheers us up faster than performing solo or playing sport, according to research at Oxford Brookes.
3 Pump up snacks. Chickpea crispbreads (£3.25 from Holland & Barrett) are packed with fibre and protein, and tasty too. Or bake your own with gram (chickpea) flour, £2.25 from Doves Farm.
4 Take flowers to work. Put a bunch on your desk or buy a pot plant. Research from Norway shows it improves concentration and productivity and lifts our spirits too.
5 Keep men on their toes. Rates of gout, which mostly affects men, have increased by 30% in 15 years. It’s often triggered by food, so limit offal, anchovies, sardines – and beer, says the UK Gout Society.
