10-Minute Loaded Air Fryer Hot Dogs: the ultimate easy & cheaty recipe!
A cosy quartet of fully loaded hot dogs in just 10 minutes – and all in one air fryer basket!

A quick survey of the Good Housekeeping office turned up a considerable number of fans for the humble hot dog. Sure, fancy sausages are very lovely in their place, but sometimes, you just want a truly delicious, smoky, classic frankfurter smothered in traditional sides and condiments. We’ve gone for a bit of a pulled pork vibe, but you can really make these dogs your own – check out our tips and substitutions below the recipe for some more ideas.
Ingredients
- 1
medium onion, finely sliced
Vegetable oil spray
- 4
jumbo frankfurters, we used Herta
- 75 g
pulled/shredded cooked ham hock
- 2 Tbsp.
barbecue sauce
- 4
hot dog buns
- 12
crinkle cut pickle slices
- 4
cheese slices, halved
TO SERVE, OPTIONAL
Ketchup
American mustard
Directions
- Step 1Preheat air fryer to 180°C. Put the sliced onions in the air fryer basket and lightly spray with oil. Cook for 3min.
- Step 2Using tongs, stir the onions and move to one side of the air fryer basket. Add the frankfurters to the empty side and cook for a further 5min.
- Step 3Meanwhile, in a small bowl, toss the ham hock and barbecue sauce together, and split the hot dog buns through the top, if not already sliced.
- Step 4Put the cooked frankfurters into the buns, add 4 pickles to each bun, then top with the barbecue pork, cheese slices and onions and arrange snugly into the air fryer basket. Cook for 2min more, until the onions are starting to crisp and the cheese is melting.
- Step 5Drizzle with ketchup and/or mustard if you like, and serve.
How can I switch this up?
You can posh this up by using brioche hot dog rolls, now widely available in supermarkets, and swap the pulled pork for some shredded beef brisket, or a spoonful of saucy baked beans.
What cheese should I use?
Pre-sliced cheeses come in a host of fancy varieties as well as the classic American burger cheese. We particularly like a smoked cheese for this tangy dog – we used smoked provolone – but you could use Cheddar, Jarlsberg… whatever you fancy.
Can I make this with regular sausages rather than frankfurters?
Absolutely, just bear in mind raw sausages will just need longer in the air fryer, so cook them before you start the onions, and make sure they’re cooked all the way through before stuffing into the buns, following pack instructions.
