Ingredients
Plain flour, to dust
320g
sheet all-butter puff pastry
11/2Tbsp.
Marmite
75g
extra mature Cheddar, finely grated
1
medium egg yolk, beaten
Directions
Step 1Line 2 large baking sheets with baking parchment. Generously flour a work surface and unroll pastry on to it, with a short edge nearest you. Spread Marmite over the top half, then sprinkle 2/3 of the Cheddar on to the Marmite. Fold lower pastry half up to enclose filling.
Step 2Re-roll filled pastry to a rough 18 x 35.5cm (7 x14in) rectangle – about 3mm (1/8in) thick. Brush with egg yolk, then sprinkle over remaining cheese. Slice across the width into 2cm (3/4in) strips. Gently twist each strip into a spiral and arrange on the lined sheets. Chill for 10min.
Step 3 Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan) mark 6. Cook straws for 15-20min until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack. Serve just-warm or at room temperature.

Her favourite carb is pasta, and our vibrant green spaghetti is her weeknight go-to. Lover of all things savoury, Senior Cookery Writer Grace Evans can be found eating crispy corn and nocellara olives at every opportunity, and will take the cheeseboard over dessert any time (though she cannot resist a slice of tres leches cake). With a wealth of professional kitchen know-how, culinary training and years of experience between them, they are all dedicated to ensuring every Good Housekeeping recipe is the best it can be, so you can trust they’ll work (and if they don’t – we’ll have the answer for why*) every time (*90% of the time the answer is: “buy an separate oven thermometer”!).
