With so many great examples coming out of English vineyards, there's never been a better time to stock up on our home-grown fizz. It's a perfect way to spread some Valentine's Day love, and makes a stylish gift.

Don’t know where to start? Read on for our top-rated English wine producers, as tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Best English sparkling wine 2025

Is English sparkling wine as good as champagne?

Primarily made with the same grapes as champagne (chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier), English sparkling wine is typically (but not always) produced to the “traditional method,” just like its French counterpart. So there really is no reason our home-grown fizz shouldn’t be every bit as delicious as champagne.

In fact, most of the major champagne houses (such as Pommery or Taittinger), have bought prime vineyards in the UK, with the change in climate and ideal grape-growing plots both key factors in luring the big brands across the channel. And although plots were originally mainly focused across Kent, East Sussex and Hampshire, this is now spreading out to Essex, Somerset and further afield.

What does English sparkling wine taste like?

Each producer will have its own characteristics; however, you can expect wines to be dry and crisp, with apple and citrus flavours, balanced by delicate brioche notes.

What do you eat with English sparkling wine?

Perfect for celebrations, serve chilled as an aperitif or with canapés; English sparkling wine is surprisingly versatile. In terms of food pairings, seafood is a winner — whether that's in a smoked salmon starter, lobster salad (or even fish and chips, trust us on that!). Aside from seafood, this homegrown fizz also complements creamy chicken and pork dishes.

How we test English sparkling wine

Our testing panel of 10, containing a mix of experts and consumers, tried 40 English sparkling wines from supermarkets and the leading brands. They were looking for a well-balanced, aromatic fizz, with lively bubbles, apple, citrus and brioche flavours.

These are the bottles offering the best value for money right now, whatever the occasion...

Chapel Down is the UK’s largest wine maker, and was one of the first brands to put English sparkling wine on the map. Bursting with crisp green apple, lemon and lime, this celebration wine could happily fill the gap where you’d ordinarily sip champagne. Try pairing with fish and chips or seafood risotto.

Made from a blend of vintages, baked apple and pronounced brioche is balanced by lively citrus acidity, creating a refreshing sparkler. If you’re looking for an alternative to champagne for special occasions, we think this is perfect.

Made in leafy Hampshire, Coates & Seely’s “Britagne” (pronounced “brit-an-ye” rather than rhyming with champagne), is every bit as complex as its French counterpart.

It won our panel over with notes of green apple, lemon and buttery richness. In fact, they were such fans of this well-structured, indulgent wine, they felt it was a dead ringer for champagne.
