What type of beer should I buy?
Beer may be one of the world’s oldest and most popular beverages, but there’s still confusion when it comes to the different styles. So, here’s a quick breakdown of the most common varieties.
Lagers
- Pilsner: A pale lager with a golden colour, a light to medium body, and a distinct hop bitterness. Originating from the Czech Republic, it is highly carbonated and refreshing.
- Helles: A German pale lager similar to pilsner but with a softer malt character and a mild bitterness.
Ales
- Pale Ale: Known for its balanced malt and hop profile, with a light amber colour.
- India Pale Ale (IPA): A hoppier and often stronger version of pale ale, originating from England. It comes in several variations, including: American IPA (typically more intense in hop flavour and aroma, often with citrus and pine notes) and New England IPA (loved for its juicy, fruity character).
- Porter: A dark ale with rich, roasted malt flavours, often offering notes of chocolate, coffee, and caramel.
- Stout: Similar to porter, but typically stronger and darker. Variations include dry stout (known for its dry finish and roasted malt character, with Guinness being the most famous example) and imperial stout (a strong stout with robust flavours and higher ABV).

We have no doubt your lucky recipient will be beelining for the Black Bomber, with its tangy flavour and rich, creamy texture; it’s the perfect sparring partner for the Curious Brew Craft Lager, which uses English malted barley and champagne yeast for a clean and fruity ale with an aromatic finish.

Our testers were big fans of the Broken Dream Nitro Breakfast Stout; moreish and smooth, it combines notes of espresso, dark chocolate and light smoke.

Our standout sundowners were the Hazy Jane (a full-flavoured hazy IPA with bags of tropical fruit flavour) and the Wingman (a boldly bitter session IPA with pine at the fore) – all enjoyed from the BrewDog Punk pint glass, of course. Also available in packs of 24 and 36 cans.

This novelty Stormtrooper trio may look a little retro, but the beers inside are certified fresh, with a variety of easy-drinking pale ales. Our panel loved the super sessionable Space Hopera, saying its full-on citrus and tropical fruit flavour make it perfect for pairing with an equally juicy burger.

Clocking in at just over £2.20 per can, we can think of no better – or budget-friendly – way to explore Beavertown beer.
There’s all the brand’s best-sellers (we’re talking Neck Oil Session IPA and Gamma Ray American Pale Ale), but the highest praise went to the alcohol-free IPA, which impressed with its tropical fruit aroma, crisp mouthfeel, and well-balanced bitterness. Plus, you can choose from a branded tumbler or pint glass to sweeten the deal.

This gift set is all killer, no filler; showcasing Camden Town Brewery’s core collection, it even includes a keepsake glass for your old man, too.
Our pick of the bunch was the Helles Lager, a masterclass in the Bavarian style, it’s light gold in the glass and boasts a clean, biscuit-like malt sweetness with subtle hoppy bitterness and a crisp finish.
