How we test baked beans
The Good Housekeeping Institute tried 12 cans of baked beans — comparing the big brands to the supermarket dupes — to see which tasted best. They were looking tender haricot beans, in a sweet, tangy tomato sauce.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was Heinz that came up top in our baked bean taste test. The brand scored highly thanks to its tender haricot beans, in the familiar sweet tomato sauce.

Our runner-up beans are impressively organic, with a glossy dark red sauce that develops in taste. There's a touch of salt which balances the flavour, although some would have liked slightly softer beans.

Despite being part of Waitrose's cost-saving essentials range, these soft and creamy haricot beans had a delicious buttery flavour. The vibrant tomato sauce could have used a touch more seasoning, though overall, the panel found these great value.
