Potato dauphinoise is one of the best comfort foods around. With its rich creamy slices of potato, fragrant note of garlic and a crunchy topping, a potato gratin ticks all the right boxes.
What is potato dauphinoise?
Gratin dauphinoise comes from the Dauphiné region of South Eastern France and dates back to 1788. Traditionally, it is a dish of sliced potatoes baked in cream and/or milk with a soft note of garlic. It should be cooked slowly at a low temperature, to create an indulgent melting potato texture with a crisp and crunchy top.
When should you serve potato dauphinoise?
Potato Dauphinoise makes a wonderful accompaniment to roasted poultry with fresh vegetables or as a centrepiece in and of itself, accompanied by a crisp salad.

This is an evenly layered potato bake with a cream sauce, topped with crispy mature cheddar cheese and a sprinkling of herbs. The aroma is deliciously rich and garlicy with a delicate parsley and thyme note, whilst the flavour is creamy with a strong, mature cheddar note, plenty of garlic and well-balanced seasoning. This stand out bake has perfectly cooked potato, a smooth sauce and crispy topping.

M&S Potato Gratin Dauphinois
Overall score: 72/100
Thick slices of potato sit in a smooth cream sauce with a golden brown, mature cheddar cheese topping. The aroma is rich and enticing with a touch of pepper and subtle garlic. The flavour has a light creaminess, warming pepper and nutmeg finishing with a gentle cheese note. Overall this is a slightly lighter dauphinoise with plenty of sauce and soft yet chunky potato slices.

Aldi Specially Selected Potato Dauphinoise
Overall score: 70/100
This gratin has an appealing golden crust, topping the creamy layered potatoes, and a pleasant tangy cheese aroma. The potato is cooked well and sits in a plentiful, well-seasoned sauce with a touch of peppery spice and gentle garlic. The crunchy topping has a slight chewiness, which some testers found a little tough although others felt it added texture.

Morrison’s The Best Maris Piper Dauphinoise Potatoes
Overall score: 70/100
A deep golden-brown crust covers plenty of neatly sliced potatoes in this dish. The gratin smells of gentle nutmeg and garlic with nutty Emmental cheese. Some testers picked up a slightly floury note. The flavour is buttery and creamy, with some pepper and garlic but a few testers found this a little bland. This is a smooth and rich gratin, with a bit of bite to the potatoes.

Tesco Finest Potato Dauphinoise
Overall score: 64/100
A golden glossy crust tops this potato bake, with a slight oily sheen. There is a strong aroma of nutty, earthy Emmental cheese whilst the flavour is mild and creamy. Our testers found the dish a little bland and in need of seasoning but the texture was creamy and smooth.

Aldi Specially Selected 4 Potato Dauphinoise with Barbers Extra Mature Cheddar Cheese
Overall score: 63/10
These individual gratins look like small potato cakes with a pale crispy topping, and have a very mild aroma of cheese and garlic. The flavour is buttery and creamy but many of our testers felt that it was lacking in cheese. The potato and sauce are light and airy, almost mashed potato-like in consistency, making it slightly cloying.

ASDA Extra Special Creamy Dauphinoise Potatoes
Overall score: 62/100
A rustic-looking gratin topped with a crumbly topping and sprinkled with fresh parsley. The aroma is tangy-smelling with a rich mature cheddar cheese note and strong garlic. The thick, creamy sauce is smooth and cheesy with a fresh herby flavour, however our testers found the potatoes slightly undercooked and the crumb a little too grainy.
