This gratin has an appealing golden crust, topping the creamy layered potatoes, and a pleasant tangy cheese aroma. The potato is cooked well and sits in a plentiful, well-seasoned sauce with a touch of peppery spice and gentle garlic. The crunchy topping has a slight chewiness, which some testers found a little tough although others felt it added texture.

Some testers picked up a slightly floury note. The flavour is buttery and creamy, with some pepper and garlic but a few testers found this a little bland. This is a smooth and rich gratin, with a bit of bite to the potatoes.

5Tesco Finest Potato Dauphinoise

A golden glossy crust tops this potato bake, with a slight oily sheen. There is a strong aroma of nutty, earthy Emmental cheese whilst the flavour is mild and creamy. Our testers found the dish a little bland and in need of seasoning but the texture was creamy and smooth.

These individual gratins look like small potato cakes with a pale crispy topping, and have a very mild aroma of cheese and garlic. The flavour is buttery and creamy but many of our testers felt that it was lacking in cheese. The potato and sauce are light and airy, almost mashed potato-like in consistency, making it slightly cloying.

7ASDA Extra Special Creamy Dauphinoise Potatoes

A rustic-looking gratin topped with a crumbly topping and sprinkled with fresh parsley. The aroma is tangy-smelling with a rich mature cheddar cheese note and strong garlic. The thick, creamy sauce is smooth and cheesy with a fresh herby flavour, however our testers found the potatoes slightly undercooked and the crumb a little too grainy.
