The online video below, showing a large Costa latte being poured into a regular sized cup and fitting perfectly, has sent the online community into meltdown. Everybody's been asking... are we being conned? The large drink appears to fit perfectly - causng many to ask, why are we being charged 30p more for a large drink?
When the man behind the video, Paul Hopkinson, posted the video on Costa’s Facebook page, he was assured by Costa that he wasn't being duped: 'The regular cup is a 12oz and the large is a 16oz so there is 4 fluid oz in size difference. Plus you also get the extra shot of coffee, hence the price difference!' The additional cost is, Costa says, because the large latte contains an extra 4 fl oz of liquid plus an extra shot of coffee.
Here at Good Housekeeping we seldom take things at face value, so we decided to head down to Costa and check for ourselves.
Our verdict?
We found the larger cup did in fact hold a bigger drink at 16 fl oz, it was in fact 4 fl oz bigger as described by Costa, the larger drink also contains an extra shot which means a larger drink doesn't mean a watered-down caffeine hit.
It's also come to light that the coffee used in the video was purchased from a Costa vending machine, not a Costa shop. But it does make you think... make sure you're getting your money's worth if you're using the machines!
