The move to bagged chicken is a first by Co-operative Food, prompted by the latest supermarket chicken health scare. The UK retailer is said to support customer food safety by eliminating the need for consumers to handle raw chicken. This simple solution limits the potential spread of bacteria, as well as speeding up the preparation and cooking process for time-poor cooks.

The Food Standards Agency guidelines encourage consumers not to wash raw chicken prior to cooking and, after handling raw chicken, to wash hands and utensils thoroughly to limit the spread of bacteria.

A range of unseasoned and marinated chickens will be available across the range. We tried the Extra Tasty Chicken with bell peppers, chilli and paprika, and we found the bags to be not only a great safety feature but they also help to seal in the flavour and juices. It’s also very easy to remove the packaging if you do decide you want to season or stuff the chicken yourself before cooking.

The Co-operative Food roast-in-the-bag chickens are rolling out now and will be in all stores by January 2015
