Everything bagel seasoning is a combination of all your favourite savoury bagel toppings in one handy mix. The exact ingredients often vary, but you can usually expect to find an addictive blend of flaky sea salt, poppy, sesame and nigella seeds, plus garlic and onion powder.

It’s claimed the combination was invented in New York around the late 1970s for indecisive deli customers who struggled to pick between the toppings, but its popularity has soared over the last few years.

Now, we’re seeing it everywhere – in salad toppings, crackers and even this peanut butter: ‘I’m absolutely addicted to the Everything Bagel Peanut Butter from my new favourite brand, Butter Bikesays our senior cookery writer, Alice. ‘It’s delicious on toast, obviously, but it also makes a great salad dressing. Simply thin down a couple of tablespoons with a little just-boiled water from the kettle and get drizzling!’

Our go-to shop-bought seasoning is Cornish Sea Salt’s Everything Bagel, but if you fancy making your own, simply mix 1tsp each flaky sea salt, black sesame seeds, white sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic granules and nigella seeds.

Definitely not just for bagels, the punchy flavour profile makes this seasoning mix a delicious garnish for salads, spicy noodles, chicken or your favourite fish. For crispy ‘everything bagel’ tofu: pat dry cubes of firm tofu and mix with a little cornflour and some everything bagel seasoning. Drizzle with oil and cook in an oven preheated to 200°C (180°C fan) mark 6 until golden and crispy. Serve with a sweet chilli sauce for dipping.
