Scones are one of Britain’s most divisive treats, and not just because no one can agree whether jam or cream goes first. Us Brits also love to debate on how to pronounce the name of the afternoon tea treat.
But how do you say it? Is it ‘sc-on’ as in gone, or ‘sc-oan’ as in phone?
Well thanks to Mary Berry, we now know the right way... it’s scone as in gone.
When judging Katie’s cheesy scone on last night’s Britain’s Best Home Cook, judge Chris Bavin said: “Are we a sc-on, or a sc-oan.”

“Sc-on,” Katie replied. “I’m a sc-on too,” Mary added.
Dan went against the grain however and admitted that he was a ‘sc-oan’ man.
This isn’t the only time Mary has spoken out about scones. Last year when speaking to Variety magazine, she admitted she would put jam on first, followed by cream.
And even the Queen has a preference, apparently opting for jam first too, according to former royal chef Darren McGrady.
Now all's left to find out is whether Mary cuts her sandwiches diagonally or vertically…
