We’ve battled with shrinking sizes, branding changes and some of our favourite flavours being removed, and now our festive favourite, Quality Street is making one of the biggest changes in 86 years to its packaging. Since 1936, Quality Street chocolates have come wrapped in its iconic silver foil and brightly coloured plastic in all the colours of the rainbow, but now Nestlé is removing these for a very good reason.

Making way for a new eco, recyclable packaging, Quality Street will now come wrapped in a vegetable-based recyclable paper, saving around 2 billion pieces of wrapping going straight to landfill. While this may be a little disappointing for those that love the shiny packaging that greets you when opening the tub, it makes incredible sense from a sustainability point-of-view. At the same time, Nestle also announced that all KitKat bars will be repackaged in a wrapper made from 80% recycled plastic.

“Quality Street is a brand that people feel very strong about. We know that opening the lid and seeing ‘the jewels’, as we call them is really important,” Cheryl Allen, head of sustainability at Nestlé tells The Sunday Times. “We think we’ve done a really good job with the redesign and feel confident that people will respond positively.”

Fortunately there's no need to fear as your favourite Quality Street will still be wrapped in their iconic colours so there won't be too many changes before Christmas. The hardest part will be deciding which flavour to eat first.
