We all know the best part of a trip to Ikea is stopping by the restaurant for a plate of the iconic meatballs. And now, the brand has announced it's launching a plant-based alternative to the popular dish.
Vegans rejoice!
Ikea has said customers can expect the same taste and texture as the original meatballs but made with plant-based ingredients.
The plant-based meatballs contain ingredients such as yellow pea protein, oats, potatoes, onion and apple and were created to be enjoyed by everyone, from meat lovers to flexitarians to vegans.
Non-vegan customers can enjoy the plant-based meatballs paired with the classic mashed potatoes, lingonberries and cream sauce, while vegans can enjoy the plant balls with a side of chips and lingonberries in the bistro. The plant-based meatballs will also be available to purchase from Swedish Food Markets to cook yourself at home.
The plant-based meatballs will be available in the bistro and market from 3 August, and in Ikea restaurants from 26 October.
In the bistro, the meatballs will cost £1.50 for a portion of 8, while a 500g bag in the Swedish Food Market will cost £2.75.
The launch comes following the brand's decision to help make healthy and sustainable living and eating more accessible. The plant-based alternative has just 4% of the climate footprint of a classic meatball, which means that one classic meatball has the same climate footprint as 24 plant-based meatballs.
Speaking about the launch, Hege Sæbjørnsen, Country Sustainability Manager, IKEA UK and Ireland, said: "At IKEA, we are committed to having a positive impact on people and the planet. In order to reduce the climate footprint of the total IKEA business, including our food business, and make climate friendly, delicious food available for everyone, we are making sure meat alternatives are an easy, desirable and affordable choice. With the new plant ball we can now offer meat lovers a great tasting, more sustainable alternative – without compromising on the IKEA meatball experience that is loved by so many."
