M&S has just nailed this season’s must wear shade - and it's all thanks to this hero piece
Your wardrobe will thank you for this one
Despite having my colour analysis done and being labelled a winter, autumn will always be my favourite season to dress for, and it’s all thanks to one shade: burgundy. While the season’s palette brims with tempting hues, from rich chocolate browns to earthy khakis, it’s this wine-red tone that consistently takes centre stage in my wardrobe.
Naturally, I’ve seen plenty of burgundy staples dominating the racks of my favourite high street brands. But my go-to label, Marks & Spencer, has completely nailed the timeless trend this year, stocking its rails with a wave of pieces destined to carry me through until the new year.
One burgundy piece that instantly caught my attention? The leather-look textured barrel-leg trousers, designed in a deep, merlot-inspired red. You might assume it was the colour alone that won me over, but the real appeal is far simpler: its versatility. They can be styled up or down with ease, a practical advantage as we edge closer to the festive season, when desk-to-drinks outfits become the everyday uniform. The dark red patent studded flat pointed shoes make an excellent pairing, finished with buckle detailing that looks similar to Ganni’s Eyelet ballet flats.
But M&S’ burgundy offering extends far beyond leather-look favourites. No autumn edit is complete without a cosy knitted jumper or cardigan, and this year’s collection comes fully stocked with soft, throw-on layers. The air yarn crew neck cardigan features gold button detailing for a chic touch, as well as deep patch pockets for a hint of utilitarian charm. There’s also a pure merino wool crew-neck top for £36 (yes, you read that right, under £40) and a wool-blend triangle scarf that conjures up images of quaint Parisian cafes.
The bag selection is equally impressive: the patent leather shoulder bag in (you guessed it) burgundy is the perfect in-between size, adopting the crescent-moon style popular among designer favourites.
And in case you weren’t already aware, M&S also stocks a plethora of other brands, many of which feature burgundy key pieces in some capacity. Three of my favourites include: a burgundy and bold red polka-dot dress from Nobody’s Child, a frill-detailed feminine shirt from Never Fully Dressed (which pairs well with the matching wrap skirt), and a corduroy dress from Albaray.
