This £135 gilet is a reinvention of the classic style you love - and looks exactly like a designer version

While they may not seem the most practical (armholes and all), the gilet is a quintessential throw on layer once temperatures start to stagnate below a certain point. Quilted, borg, puffer, you name it, you’ll find gilets in all kinds of textures and materials that add visual interest to an otherwise simple outfit. One that puts a contrasting twist on the style? It comes from Aligne.

If you’re in the know, you might recognise the design: it looks eerily like a Marfa Stance style, complete with identical borg pockets stitched onto a contrasting gilet structure. There are, however, two differences: the original vest is made from suede, while Aligne’s is crafted from double-quilted fabric, and it comes without a £1000+ price tag.

The affordable version is part of the Lucy Bronze X Aligne collaboration, and features a casual crew neckline for running errands, as well as a sturdy zip front to tackle the end of year chill.

But it doesn’t stop at designer alternatives. The high street is brimming with fashionable options that are just as functional for layering. Next’s corduroy gilet is a versatile choice and pairs well with soft trousers and a neatly layered, crisp white shirt. H&M offers a similar chocolate brown version, with the main difference being the material: a comfy, cloud-like padded style.

As for something with a bit more wow factor (perfect for evenings out or upcoming Christmas parties) consider River Island’s fluffy gilet, which lends itself well to a stylish blouse, tailored trousers, and pointed toe mules. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something with a little more edge, choose Mint Velvet’s bonded tan gilet for a touch of country charm.
