Are these the best travel trousers in the world?
The ingredients for your perfect travel trousers are here.
I’m just going to say it: everyone needs a pair of good travel trousers. The kind you throw on without thinking and somehow still look put together. The kind that earn their keep in transit with comfort, usefulness and low-key chic baked in.
I used to optimistically travel in shorts, or stride through check-in wearing jeans, shades and preppy shirt like I was about to be photographed by a paparazzo. But my bruised legs on arrival meant I ditched the idea of shorts – however optimistic – years ago. And denim? No no no! Jeans are too tight and don’t work with even the slightest bit of in-flight bloat.
Now, I only use two pairs for travel: my harem trousers from British brand Hush (£60), and an ankle-grazing pair from the US casual brand Vuori (£140) when I’m travelling for work. Hush’s version is cotton-modal with just enough stretch and I’ve worn them hundreds of times over three years – on holidays, long-hauls, even ferry rides. They cuff at the ankle, billow through the leg and keep me warm in mid-air. Vuori’s are sleeker: technically activewear, but tailored with subtle darting and crisp lines. They pass as office-ready with a shirt or silk blouse and loafers, and have served me well for two years.
Both pairs are made for comfort and movement with soft waistbands that don’t dig in, fabrics that breathe and always pockets.
If you’re after trousers that travel well, feel like loungewear and still look sharp, our edit includes my favourites and also spans jogger and smarter styles for various budgets, including some in the summer sales, from £13.60 H&M joggers, up to £140 from Vuori. Because good travel style really does start and end with the right pair of trousers.
