I’m calling it. This is the trouser of summer
And it’s the shape we’ll all be wearing in the autumn too
I’ve been searching for the perfect summer trousers since last year. My mission? To find flowy trousers in the sweet spot between a barrel jean and Gen Z super wide legs. Something with light volume, that doesn’t puddle around your ankle and soak up street dirt, and balances it with a cuffed hem, all the better to show off a slim ankle and a barely there sandal or ballerina sneaker. Think girl band All Saints circa Y2K, but with a crisp modern twist.
In March I found them at Arket, but they'd already sold out. But this morning up popped the sold out “Balloon Leg Poplin Trousers” - a puff of crisp white cotton poplin with a flowy style which cuff at the ankle, and back in stock. Happy days!
This got me to thinking: when a brand repeats something, it’s because they know they’re onto something. So it is with these trousers. In fact, the more I looked around for them, the more I saw that many good pairs from brands like Massimo Dutti and Studio Nicholson had sold out – though the cotton cargos from Cos (which can be buttoned at the hem), cuffed trousers from Free People, and the Paloma cuffed jogger by Hush in this edit are still in stock.
This isn’t the last we’ll be seeing of cuffed volume trousers. In fact I’d go so far as to predict this will be the trouser shape for the rest of the year. Get ahead of this shape shift with one of the pairs shared here. You can wear them for many summers to come, and feel stylish and fashionable for every single one of them.
