The best suede jacket to add to your autumn wardrobe now

And what to do if you drop your lunch down it (been there, got the stain to prove it)

There’s a bit of a 1970s revival happening in fashion right now (to be fair, the decade tends to come back every autumn, thanks to its timeless, cosy silhouettes and fabrics – think wide-leg cords, blazers and polo necks).

And spearheading the 1970s charge is the suede jacket. From lightweight “shacket” styles, such as Sézane’s sellout Will jacket to suede makeovers of the classic biker jacket and winter-ready shearling coats you’ll never want to take off, the GH fashion team has trawled the high street to find the best suede jackets to add to your A/W 24 wardrobe now.

How to clean your suede jacket

As someone who once dropped an oily taco on their suede Gucci bag, I’m very invested in how to remove spills and care for new suede purchases. Luckily, Good Housekeeping’s household advice editor has all the tips. First up, you need a good waterproof spray to protect it before you even step out of the house – just make sure it’s definitely suitable for suede and test it on a small patch that’s not so visible first.

If you get any mud or rain spotting on your new jacket, we recommend wiping it with a clean, damp microfibre cloth, then leaving it to dry naturally. For everyday cleaning, use a suede block and for any large stains or discolouration, we recommend a specialist cleaner.

To keep your new suede jacket in pristine condition, read our household advice editor’s tips on caring for suede and leather.

Yes, this is a high-maintenance fabric, but we think it’s worth it. These are our fashion team’s top buys for autumn 2024.

Sézane Will Jacket

Will Jacket

Sézane’s suede Will jacket keeps selling out, which is testament to its quality. It’s lightweight (like a slightly thicker shirt), soft and oh-so-chic. It’s currently sold out in the camel and yellow colourways, but if you’re quick, the khaki shade is still available in most sizes.

It will go perfectly with your denim and layered over thin knits and shirts for these in-between autumn days, then it can be layered under heavier coats come winter.

2

Boden Faux Shearling Jacket

Faux Shearling Jacket

We love the whiff of Del Boy about this cosy shearling jacket from Boden, which features buttery brown suede and faux shearling detail. It’s great for colder days, worn with a polo neck or a chunky knit underneath. Buy early to avoid disappointment when temperatures start to plummet!

Monsoon Suede Collared Biker Jacket

Suede Collared Biker Jacket

If you prefer more of a boxy, biker shape, this one from Monsoon has caught our eye. It has all the classic zip details but with a softer finish than your standard leather biker.

4

Whistles Lani Tassel Suede Jacket

Lani Tassel Suede Jacket

For those prepared to splurge (and, let’s face it, suede never goes out of style), we suggest this tassel style from Whistles (the high street favourite has a range of suede options this season). As well as the fringe detail, we love the rich yellowy/olive shade. Wear with your new-season barrel-leg jeans and a light knit for the perfect on-trend autumn look.

If you’re after a jacket that will work well with your tailoring for the office, we think this darker green option from Massimo Dutti is a good pick. It will look sleek with your slouchy pinstripe trousers, polo neck and kitten heels for A/W 24.

Ba&sh Milas Straight-Cut Jacket

Milas Straight-Cut Jacket

Proving that French brands are the place to go for cool suede cover-ups this season is this straight-cut design from Ba&sh. We love the simple shape and gathered detail on the back. It’s a great mid-season piece – layer over a long-sleeved midi dress and boots.

Asos Design Suedette Funnel Neck Bomber Jacket

Suedette Funnel Neck Bomber Jacket

Suede is a pricey fabric, but this bomber jacket with a funnel neck is a great affordable option. We love the sporty feel with the elasticated cuffs and hem – we’d wear with a chic take on tracksuit bottoms and a tee or shirt for a cool, athleisure-inspired look.

M&S Autograph Suede Trench Coat

Suede Trench Coat

Though this one is very low on stock online, we’ve put it in just in case you can grab your size, or it comes back in stock. We love the colour and slouchy silhouette of this one – a relaxed take on the classic trench. Wear with your finest tailoring.

Sézane Zig Jacket

Zig Jacket

Our second option from Sézane, this has more of a boxy, biker shape, but still boasts that French quality and flair we’ve come to expect from the brand. This one will never go out of style.
