Knowing what to wear on a first date is a total minefield, isn’t it? Cue multiple video chats, photo-sharing marathons and a storm of style anxiety in the BFF group chat. The overthinking trap is set. The outfit possibilities stretch out before you like a personality menu: which “you” are you debuting tonight?

But don’t fall down that rabbit hole – not on a first date, anyway. Save the slinky dresses for later. Instead, there’s a foolproof first-date style formula that works every time. Apply it, and getting dressed becomes fun, stress-free and pumped with confidence – your best self, on repeat, until you find a first date worth keeping.

Here’s the secret: this formula relies on clothes you already own, the ones that make you feel fantastic. Sure, a new outfit might call to you, but it’s a wildcard – stick to what you know works. A first date is not the time for rogue fashion experiments.

Now, the formula itself? It’s laughably simple and so obvious you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it first. I used it on my last successful first date four years ago and I’ll be dusting it off again this spring when I dive back into the dating pool.

Step one: your favourite sexy/cool jeans.

You know the ones – the pair everyone compliments you on and you feel unbeatable in. Denim says sociable, fun and approachable. It’s a warm handshake, not a cold one.

Step two: pair them with a slightly daring top.

Something you wouldn’t wear to brunch with the family. It should look a little alluring across a dinner table and show a hint of skin. Think Kristen Bell’s accidental first date in Nobody Wants This: black jeans paired with a black off-the-shoulder bodysuit. Sexy, sure, but still unmistakably her.

Step three: add jewellery.

Statement earrings are a no-brainer. They’re conversation starters, show a hint of pizzazz and light up your face.

Step four: sexy-ish shoes.

Opt for a low or mid-heel – high enough to feel fancy but still comfortable enough to give you some swagger. Flats? Too everyday. These should be your “best” shoes, the ones that remind you how fabulous you are. I’d go for a pointy-toed slingback.

Step five: finish with a stained lip

Long-lasting, kiss-proof and no collar stains in sight. Effortless glamour, tick.

This formula works for everyone. Even men – if they skip the lipstick, earrings and slingbacks and stick with their own confidence-boosting favourites.

To take it to the next level, though, I checked in with fashion psychologist Shakaila Forbes-Bell. She’s an expert in first-date dressing and gave my formula a little upgrade. “Always add a pop of red,” she says, “whether it’s lips, nails or an accessory. Studies show that in dating scenarios, red is seen as more sensual and arousing.” She also recommends doubling up on jewellery: “Statement pieces reveal personality and spark conversation – perfect for showing the real you.” As for heels? “Comfortable heels are ideal – they boost your sense of power.”

With these tweaks, the formula is officially foolproof. So, next time someone calls the “jeans and a top” rule boring, don’t listen. It’s your shortcut to confidence – and maybe even a second date.
