What we’re shopping from the M&S x Bella Freud collection

Apparently, Freud heard the phrase “divine feminine” in a meditation class and scribbled it down. Referring to the goddess energy inside all of us, we love what it stands for as well as how it shows up in the collection, adding personality to a gorgeous grey 100% cashmere polo neck – perfect for wearing with your barrel-leg jeans or under the pinstripe navy suit from the collection. This one is also available in black if you prefer.

This chic single-breasted jacket in a navy pinstripe could be straight out of Freud’s main collection. Beautifully tailored, it can be worn with the coordinating trousers and the blue silk pussy-bow blouse, or paired with one of the cashmere knits and jeans for a more relaxed take on tailoring.

The coordinating pinstripe trousers come with the brand’s signature skinny cut and kick flare. Wear as a two-piece with the jacket or simply with a crisp white shirt and light merino knit. There’s also a pleated, kilt-style pinstripe skirt in the range if you want to mix and match.

If you only buy one thing, we recommend this shirt. An incredibly versatile statement piece, it will look as good with sleek tailoring as it will with your sequin midi skirt come party season. Bows are huge this season. Literally. So snap this one up fast.

Another 100% cashmere knit at a fraction of the price of those in the main collection, we love the bold red shade of this jumper (although it’s also available in navy, FYI). We'll be wearing ours with jeans and biker boots on the weekend. Because we love getting out in nature on our days off.

This is denim made to flatter, from the high waist to the subtle 1970s-inspired kick flare. Wear with one of the silk bow-tie shirts for a look that’s put together but never overdone.

We love the contrast city-boy collar of this pinstripe silk shirt, which, again, wouldn’t look out of place in Freud’s main collection. Use it to dress up your favourite jeans or remove the bow and wear under one of the range’s statement knits, collar and cuffs out.

Add a pop of colour and texture to your autumn wardrobe with this sporty, V-neck jumper, which gives a nod to school pullovers, albeit a lot more chic than ours ever looked (probably because we haven’t dragged it across the locker room floor after netball yet).

“The thing I remember about M&S [growing up] was that it was an emporium full of things, and that it had great jumpers – very good V-necks – and I had an obsession with V-necks,” says Freud of her inspiration for this piece, which is also available in a classic camel.

We love a good knitted vest here at GH and you can’t go wrong with a bold stripe, making this a great autumn buy at a good price. Layer the merino knit over shirts and under jackets for instant added warmth and print.

Featuring a slogan handwritten by the designer herself, we love the uplifting blue sky shade of this chunky merino knit. We’ll be wearing this one under our navy pinstripe suit and layered over shirts.

“The words I chose for this collection, I wanted to imagine how people coming into M&S would be able to relate to them and enjoy the idea of owning them and wearing them. ‘Honey’, for example, I love that word – it’s just an affectionate term,” says Freud of her cute and cosy Honey jumpers, which come in pretty rose and camel colourways.

You can never have too many shoppers in your wardrobe (certainly not if ours is anything to go by…). If you want a little piece of the collection but haven’t got a lot to spend, this bag is a good entry point – or, indeed, entry drug (again, if you’re anything like us).

Another affordable accessory that would make a great addition to your A/W wardrobe, this cashmere hat comes in either a punchy lime or pastel pink shade. We think the lime would add a pop of colour to a classic camel trench and your favourite cords.
