Sigourney Weaver is a Hollywood legend and, from iconic films such as Alien to Ghostbusters, has left her an indelible mark across the sci-fi genre and beyond. Now, the star's incredible career is being celebrated with the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
Sigourney is only the third American actress to receive the prestigious award at Venice, following Jane Fonda and Jamie Lee Curtis. She arrived in Venice on Tuesday (27 August) ahead of the receiving her honour and looked fabulous is a nautical inspired look as she waved to paparazzi along the waterfront.
Sigourney opted for a black and white look, including white high waisted trousers and a sleek black blazer, topping the ensemble off with a straw boating hat.
Speaking to Deadline about her upcoming Lifetime Achievement award, Sigourney said it was "very exciting. From the first time I went to Venice, it has been a very meaningful festival to me," adding that it was the first festival she attended, which was for the film Alien in 1986.
Discussing that breakout film in the interview, she said she loved how, "the character of Ripley [Sigourney's role] is almost an everyman character. That freed me up from ever having to act like a girl, or dress like a girl. That was very astute of the writers. At a certain point you even forget that it’s a woman. You just know it’s Ripley and you’re hoping she survives."
Of the original Ghostbusters, in which she also starred, Sigourney said, "it knocked my socks off. It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read and so delightful. It was a joyous love letter to New York and Ivan and the boys were so good in it. I learnt a lot from the experience."
The 81st Venice International Film Festival officially opens on 28 August and will run until 7 September 2024.
