I’m Kevin Moss. I’m the Creative Director of John Frieda Salons, here in London. And I’ve been there for over 25 years now – it’s a long time isn’t it?

One of the problems you’re going to encounter if you colour treat your hair is hanging on to that colour – stopping it from leaching out. So you really need to use a non-sulphate shampoo, specifically designed to stop that cuticle swelling. You swell your cuticle, you’re going to lose your colour.

The condition of the hair matters as well. It gets dry, brittle – sort of brassy. Again, choose the best conditioner for that. Conditioning agents in the conditioners are traditionally known to yellow your hair. So again, be very careful which conditioner you use.

If you’re a lighter brown, or even a dark blonde – so when you were a child you were quite blonde – I would add highlights and warmer tones, to get that childlike, baby beautiful look that you used to have.

So, when you approach colour when you get older, I think the real rule of thumb is – definitely don’t go too dark, and definitely don’t go too light. Both are a little harsh and they’re going to make you look older.
