If there's one colour that's on my radar at the moment, it's purple.
The 81st Golden Globes took place earlier in January and, as the first award show of the season, they did not disappoint on the frock front. Naturally, there was a beautiful array of black and off-white floor length gowns with show-stopping sculptural silhouettes like a Golden Globe award itself. There was also a smattering of simple but striking red-hot dresses (Julianne Moore and Ayo Edebiri) and a few stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Margot Robbie wore pink — as would be expected of Barbie herself.
But, it was the unexpected appearance of the colour purple which caught the eye of fashion editors. Helen Mirren looked regal in a lavender Dolce & Gabbana dress and oversized puff-sleeved opera coat and Brie Larson looked perfect in a lilac A-line Prada number.
As for the celebrity who stole the show? It had to be Oprah. Her exquisite, embellished amethyst Louis Vuitton gown brought utter joy to the red carpet... which got me thinking; is purple set to dethrone pink this spring?
Purple is a powerful colour. It's a hue synonymous with luxury, passion and royalty (Oprah is after all, celebrity royalty) — but somehow it feels like a harder colour to wear than others and is often overlooked for pink and red. Most people don’t consider themselves to be a ‘purple person’ but I think purple can feel grown-up and sophisticated compared to bubblegum pink and a little more flamboyant than classic red. Not to be mistaken for ‘granny mauve’, there’s a newfound love for this feel-good colour — especially if you have grey hair — as it acts as a neutral backdrop which can create a dramatic and stunning contrast to bright Cadbury-purple shades.
Wondering what to wear it with? For a classic finish, silver, white and grey will feel fresh and elegant. However, if you’re looking for full-on dopamine dressing, hot pink or orange look incredible.
If you’re in the mood for something new and want an alternative to the predictable pink we've been wearing for the past few seasons, be brave and give purple a go.
