The Duchess of Sussex may have become royalty last year, but she's still a fan of the same high street stores.

Meghan just finished her royal tour of South Africa, where she showcased a range of relaxed but chic outfits daily. Her chosen brands? Luxury designers like Veronica Beard and House of Nonie, but also affordable labels such as Everlane, Banana Republic and J.Crew.

The Duchess proves that you don't have to spend a fortune to look expensive (like music to our ears) with some simple styling tricks – elevating pieces with a pair of elegant espadrilles, or adding some simple gold jewellery.

Everlane

Based in San Francisco, Everlane prides itself on championing the true staple wardrobe and sustainable sourcing, by way of small stock levels and ethical manufacturing. The focus on fewer essentials is working in Meghan fans' favour: she carried the brand's Day tote (Angelina Jolie is also a fan) back in 2017 and, even though it's been a constant struggle to keep the bag in stock, it's still a regular feature on the site. During her recent royal tour, the Duchess wore more Everlane: a black wide-leg jumpsuit and a pair of red suede slingback flats. Both are still available to buy, but we doubt they'll hang around for long.

Banana Republic

When Meghan was first photographed after giving birth, the public couldn't help but marvel at her chic trench dress (by London-based brand Wales Bonner) just as much as baby Archie. The tailor-made piece was too expensive for us mere mortals but, luckily, the Duchess showed us a more affordable Banana Republic version during a recent visit to the University of Johannesburg.

J Crew

Meghan has worn J.Crew too many times for us to count. First, there was that gorgeous navy coat she wore to Birmingham back in March 2018, then the khaki military jacket she teamed with a Breton top while pregnant, then that denim dress she was spotted in at the US Open. Her most recent choice, a knitted skirt with vertical stripes that she wore to a private women's only dinner in South Africa, was a sell-out. Net-a-porter has just re-stocked it in a few sizes (hurry if you want to get your hands on one) and also have a playful rainbow version.

Missoma

When it comes to jewellery, Meghan is all about layering delicate pieces rather than going for blingy, over-the-top gem stones. The brand to facilitate her down-to-earth taste? Missoma, a British company that specialises in demi-fine jewellery made from gold-plated metals – with prices starting from just £45. The Duchess was wearing it long before she met Prince Harry, and still champions the brand now. Among some of her favourites are the Interstellar Ring, Open Heart Signet and the Rainbow Moonstone Leaf Bracelet.

& Other Stories

You might associate this high street store with another royal, the Duchess of Cambridge, whose floral-print dress stole the spotlight at the Chelsea Flower show earlier this year. Meghan was actually a fan first; she wore one of its signature tie-waist dresses in a polka dot print on a boat trip to Fraser Island last year. A few months later, the Duchess wore the Scandi brand's forest-green shirt with a tonal leather pencil skirt during an official visit to Sussex. She teamed it with a Giorgio Armani coat and a Gabriela Hearst bag, but the 100% silk number looked just as expensive – and the good news is, her exact piece is still available.

Castañer

Both Kate and Meghan are rarely seen in the summer without their trusty Castañer wedges. The Spanish brand specialises in espadrilles (it's said to make them for high-end designer labels too) and its most popular style, the Carina, is a royal favourite. Meghan's preferred colourway is the black, which grounds every look from the blue shirt dress she wore on the Royal tour of South Africa to the pink boho number in Fiji last year.

Marks & Spencer

It's only right that a member of the British monarchy should love the high street's own version of royalty: M&S. Meghan has certainly stepped up, sporting one of the brand's affordable jumpers during a trip to Brixton in January 2018 and opting for one of its tailored dresses while at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. A year on, and M&S has brought us some good news for autumn/winter 2019: the Duchess' sell-out dress has been re-stocked in her chosen black colourway and a chic camel tone. The off-the-shoulder, figure-hugging number nods to Roland Mouret's signature Galaxy styles, but costs just £55.

H&M

When Meghan Markle visited The Mayhew charity in a £24.99 H&M Mama dress, fans went wild. Her knitted maternity number sold out instantly and, in true royal style, subsequently started selling for double on eBay. The Swedish retailer sadly never re-stocked this model, but we've picked out some pieces on the site we think the Duchess would definitely approve of:

Reformation

Reformation is an LA-based brand that was focusing on sustainable sourcing long before it became the zeitgeist. Naturally, eco-conscious Meghan is a fan – she wore one of the label's linen dresses during a trip to Fraser Island last year. It was a big hit with fans and sold out instantly. The 'Pineapple' design is no longer available, but you can now shop the brand in the UK as the first London store just opened last month in Notting Hill.

Reiss

British brand Reiss is well known for its chic separates, coats and dresses and, also, its royal following. (Kate Middleton was reportedly responsible for an uptick in Reiss sales back in the early 2010s, after sightings of her in it kickstarted what people called the 'Kate Effect’.) When Meghan wore one its dresses – a printed, sixties-inspired shift with balloon sleeves and a high collar – on International Women's Day 2019, it sold out shortly after. She styled it with an Alexander McQueen blazer, black heels and a Stella McCartney clutch bag, proving she's the queen of high-low dressing.
