Fun fact: women in the royal family are rarely seen without a clutch or bag of some sort, and if you look carefully you'll notice that they typically hold bags in their left hand. For example, here's an example from Meghan Markle's royal engagement earlier this month:

So, could there be a reason for this? Well, according to royal expert Myka Meier of Beaumont Etiquette (who was trained by a former member of the Queen's Household) there is a simple reason: royal etiquette.

As she puts it, "When entering a room or event, handbags or briefcases are held in the left hand so that your right hand stays open to meet, greet and shake hands! Prince Charles does this too!"
