When the Duchess of Cambridge visited the Imperial War Museum ahead of Armistice Day last week (31 October), you may have noticed that Kate didn’t wear a conventional paper poppy for her tour.

Instead, she chose an unusual brooch for the occasion – with a very special meaning.

The 36-year-old royal opted for a Women of The First World War Brooch, which commemorates the women who played a huge role in the First World War.

Sold on the Poppy Shop website for £29.99, the beautiful piece of jewellery was created by The Royal British Legion as a dedication to the courageous women who served and lost their lives as a direct result of the war.

They served as nurses in the field hospitals, worked in factories making munitions and on the land, being later recognised with the right to vote.
