Do you think your face highlighter is ageing you, rather than giving you a luminous glow? It's a classic makeup mistake that many of us make, according to Milk makeup artist Sara Wren.

When applying highlighter, Sara revealed if you select the wrong highlighter it can all go wrong from there.

"You run the risk of the dreaded 'fall out' where you end up with glitter all over your face, or it can settle into fine lines and wrinkles," she said.

Sara suggested: "When trying to achieve a natural glow, it's best to avoid chunky or heavy glitter particles."

These textures will emphasis the skin's texture, drawing attention to any bumpy or rough skin.

Instead, it's best to go for "a softer, more pearlescent powder, cream, or liquid highlighter because they are able to take on the texture of skin", according to Sara.

These textures are better as they often hydrate the skin, which helps it appear fresh, plump and dewy. It helps the highlighter sits better on top of the skin and gives a luminous glow.

So what highlighter should you try?

To avoid emphasising skin texture, we here at Good Housekeeping love a cream highlighter like the RMS Luminizier. It comes in multiple shades to suit different skin tones, with the original in the collection being Living Luminizer. It gives a glossy sheen and is loved my many makeup artists for good reason.

For a less glossy finish and in a slightly mousse-like texture, try the Magic Luminizer. It dries down on the skin and leaves a pearly glow. For deeper skin tones, try a golden-nude like the Master Mixer.

For something more intense, try a liquid highlighter like the cult Cover FX Customer Enhancer Drops. The shade Moonlight is one of our favourites, as like the moon it reflects back any luminosity. A little goes a long way with this product, so blend a tiny amount on the high points of your face for gorgeous radiance.
