We can't be the only ones who've logged into Facebook only to be irritated by old posts dominating our news feeds.

The problem is down to the way Facebook orders its posts. By default, it displays what it calls 'top stories' (the ones with the most comments or likes) ahead of more recent posts. Fine if you're looking for interesting stories, but less good if you want to keep up with what's happening with the family.

Fortunately, if you'd prefer to see more recent content there's a simple trick you can use.

On a smartphone or tablet, open the 'Menu' by pressing the icon featuring three horizontal lines. This is on the bottom of the screen on iPhones and iPads but at the top of the screen on an Android device. Scroll down and select 'Feeds' (you may have to tap 'See More' if you can’t find it).

Now tap 'Most Recent' and your stories will be switched to chronological order.

However, if you open any other menu or visit somewhere else in the Facebook app, your news feed won’t stay in this order. Sadly you’ll have to repeat the steps above every time.

It’s much simpler to change if you’re using Facebook on a computer. Just press the three dots next to 'News Feed' and select 'Most Recent'. Your 'News Feed' will be re-ordered to show newest stories first and unlike on the mobile version, it will remain like this even when you close the browser and re-open it later.
